Real Life Barbie

These women (and men) want to be perfect so badly that they've spent tens of thousands of dollars to transform themselves into real life versions of Barbie dolls.  As someone who is 100% against plastic surgery, this article was actually sickening for me to read.... love your bodies! and don't turn them into real life versions of plastic dolls.....

I LOVE SHOES!

Club Attire

Coming from a small town in Wisconsin, learning how to dress for the clubs in Hollywood was no easy feat.  The only club in Wauwatosa is club Sugar, famous for a girl once being stabbed on the dance floor there with a needle that supposedly gave her AIDS... classy establishment.
Looking back I will admit that I erred on the side of slutty when I first started going out.  I wore a lot of bodycon dresses from H&M that really weren't my style but I figured the shorter, the tighter, the better.  The only good thing was that I fit right in because a lot of girls make the same mistake.  One has to learn to walk the fine line between classy and risqué, because in that happy medium you find the perfect club attire.
By this I simply mean....
If you're showing legs, don't show boobs
If you're wearing tight on top, don't wear tight on bottom
If you're wearing a crop top, cover your ass
Its pretty simple really
Another good rule of thumb is don't wear cheap fabrics... I mean its LA if you look cheap people are going to notice.
When I went out this thursday I wore tribal print red and black shorts from tobi.com with an orange Trouve top that criss-crossed in the back.  I again wore my favorite Steve Madden nude pumps, and topped off the outfit with a baby blue statement necklace and black beaded clutch.
I like to think that I have now found that happy medium I mentioned.  With the wrong styling this outfit could have been far too risqué but I like to think that my jewelry and shoe choices brought me back to the classy side.
When getting dressed for the clubs here's my advice:
If you wouldn't want to be seen in daylight in your outfit, you look too whorey...No one wants to date a slut.
Cheers! and happy clubbing

Where you can find me when I'm not working

This past saturday me and my roomie had a chance to go out to Hyde Lounge on Sunset.  I wasn't sure what to expect as i had never been there before, but the venue ended up being really cool.

It had an indie-meets-hip hop vibe to it.  It was essentially just a bunch of tables with bottle service next to a dj...so basically you just drink dance and chill.
I had a really good time, but me and kenzie just couldn't seem to get a good pic...we tried though
I wish we had gotten a full body picture, I wore a white Topshop crop top with leather leggings and steel-toed Steve Madden nude pumps.  I topped it off with my gold clutch and colorful earrings
awkward sitting pic

here's the outfit all laid out.  It doesn't look nearly as good as it does on but you get the idea of it

A good friend knows when to crop out other friends

DIY Splatter Painted Nails

You don't have to drop dollars for a fabulous mani, lord knows I never do

Here's how to create these splatter painted nails at home

What you'll need:

  • 1 regular sized straw (just not the extra wide ones, length is not important)
  • tin foil
  • 1 base color
  • as many accent colors as you'd like (I chose three complementary colors)

First, apply your base color
Dont worry about making it perfect, you're going to have to clean up your mani at the end anyways
Let it dry.

Next, Put a few drops of your first accent color on the aluminum foil

Take your straw, and dip one end in the polish.  It should create a light film across the opening of the straw.  Then blow into the straw so that the color splatters on to your nail.  I suggest practicing on the foil a couple of times to get the hang of it first before trying it on your nails.

Continue layering with all of your accent colors. Its gonna get hella messy just fyi

When you're satisfied with your level of splatter grab some q-tips,
clean that shit up,
and voila! you've got a fly ass mani

Throw some top coat on there for extra protection against the manicure killers, and you're golden.  Now go out and rock that mani girl, your nails look awesome and so do you

Clean Up your Closet!

Forget spring cleaning, summer cleaning is where the heavy lifting comes in......
It's officially that time of year where you have to put away your beloved chunky sweaters and heavy boots to make room for your breezy summer dresses and daringly short shorts.
Now, if you're anything like me, you probably have a closet that's already bursting with clothes, as well as a hamper full of things that you have no space for.

If you're REALLY living the YB&F lifestyle then you
probably have to share a closet just like I do. It sucks.

My first step in organizing this mess was putting away all of my heavy winter items. I mean, we're talking

  • cable knits
  • turtlenecks
  • most things black
  • wool sweaters
  • heavy cardigans
  • anything that covers your booty when you put it on

This actually made me a little sad.  As a Wisconsin girl heavy sweaters are near and dear to my heart.  Unfortunately though, my heavy winter items have no place in a California summer, so sadly they had to go up on the shelf :(

Getting rid of the sweaters opened up a lot of room in my closet.  All I did was fold them up nicely and put them on the rack/shelf that is above my hanging rack. they took up a surprisingly small amount of space

I also used this rack to organize my heels in a nice and orderly fashion.  My advice with shoes in a limited space is to display nicely the ones you wear on special occasions and put your everyday shoes on the floor of your closet where you can access them easily.

The last thing I did to beautify my closet was to color coordinate
please, DO NOT BE ASHAMED TO COLOR COORDINATE YOUR CLOSET
your clothes are awesome
sometimes Id rather spend time with mine than real people
so treat them with the love and care they deserve
color coordinate the shit out of your closet, it makes it look pretty and if your clothes look pretty you will be happy, and isn't that what matters most?

Now, you might be thinking 'well this is all just fabulous Emily, but what about my jeans?'
to that I say
ROLL THEM!
they take up sooo much less space when you do this, and when you have limited space/drawers/furniture/everything like I do this is super appreciated
I organize mine in what is supposed to be a shoe rack, but it does the job wonderfully.

As a side note, if while cleaning out your closet you find some items that you never wear anymore just get rid of them.  We all like to pretend like its not true, but deep down we all know that there IS such a thing as having too many clothes

Only keep something if you can think of an outfit you can wear it with
and furthermore make it an outfit that you would wear that week
if you can think of an outfit, but you have no occasion to wear said outfit, get rid of it.
Like really, get rid of it.

I highly suggest selling your clothes (if they're not all ratchet) because then you can take that money and buy something you'll actually wear! Plus, if you're reading this you're probably broke and could use the extra couple bucks.

So here's how my closet ended up... its got nothing on Carrie Bradshaw's, I know, but when you're young and broke and sharing a tiny closet in a tiny bedroom in a tiny apartment in Hollywood you can only expect so much
Whats important here is that it looks fabulous, my summer clothes are accessible, and I no longer have to use my hamper as a temporary home for my clothes that outnumbered my hangers (which was a lot)

So, hopefully this inspires you to clean out your own closet
take it from me, a grade-A slob
having an organized closet feels just fab
